Employee Engagement Survey

Engaged employees are loyal and inspired people who care about their organisation and work hard to bring about organisational success. Their loyalty is born out of a sense of emotional attachment to the organisation and in particular, a belief in its vision, values and purpose. Quantum's extensive research into the issue of Employee Engagement has revealed that each organisation has its own unique mix of values, attitudes, terms and benefits that will be successful in eliciting engagement from their employees.

Quantum's Employee Engagement Survey will help you to motivate and retain your employees by identifying the unique drivers of Engagement for your organisation. Recommendations to increase Employee Engagement levels can then be made on the basis of this information. This in turn will lead to better performance, lower staff turnover and less absenteeism for your organisation.

Quantum's Approach: Employee Engagement Survey

Firstly, a general measure of Employee Engagement levels within your organisation is taken by means of an Employee Engagement Index. The index measures the extent to which your employees display the following engagement behaviours:

  • Promote Externally (equivalent of SAY) - The extent to which employees promote your organisation as an employer and as a service provider to their family and friends. If employees are willing to put their reputation on the line by recommending your organisation to their families and friends, then this is a sure sign that they believe strongly in the vision, values and purpose of your organisation and are proud to be associated with it.
  • Commit (equivalent of STAY) - The extent to which employees are committed to the future success of your organisation and want to remain long-term in order to help bring about the organisation's vision. Engaged employees rarely (if ever) think about leaving the organisation.
  • Exceed (equivalent of STRIVE) - The extent to which employees are inspired to go above and beyond what is expected of them in their daily work. The individual feels a strong sense of personal investment in the organisation and is motivated to go the extra mile because they understand how their work contributes to the success of the organisation.

Quantum's Approach: Identifying Drivers of Employee Engagement

Quantum will then use advanced statistical techniques to assess the causal relationships between the Employee Engagement Index and the 12 Employee Engagement Drivers which have proven to be reliable predictors of Employee Engagement throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The Employee Engagement Drivers have been separated into two distinct categories: Hygiene Factors and Motivation Factors.

Hygiene Factors are those factors that are actually extrinsic to the individual's work such as Remuneration & Benefits, Work Conditions, Job Security, Relationship with Immediate Manager / Supervisor, Relationship with Colleagues and Organisational Values and Policies. These factors need to be met in order to ensure that the individual is not dissatisfied with their current employment situation. It is only after an employee's expectations regarding Hygiene Factors have been met that an employee can take their levels of commitment and motivation from Satisfaction to Engagement.

Motivation Factors enable Engagement. These factors arise from the intrinsic conditions of the work itself (The nature of the work the individual performs). Motivation factors have the capacity to gratify such psychological needs as Achievement, Competency, Status, Personal Worth and Self Realisation. The psychological fulfillment that arises from meeting and exceeding an employee's expectations regarding Motivation Factors is at the heart of Employee Engagement.

The Employee Engagement Drivers are set out in the diagram below:

The statistical procedures utilised by Quantum take into account the interrelatedness of the Employee Engagement Drivers and can determine:

  • the unique effect which each Driver has on Employee Engagement levels within your organisation.
  • how the Drivers work together to affect Employee Engagement levels within your organisation.
  • the expected improvement in Employee Engagement levels that should occur as a result of improving a particular Driver.

As a result, Quantum will be able to identify the specific Drivers that can be leveraged to enhance Employee Engagement within your organisation and will also provide recommendations to improve these Drivers.

Quantum's Approach: Measuring Net Employee Engagement

Quantum will provide a breakdown of the percentage of “Actively Engaged”, “Satisfied”, “Undifferentiated” and “Actively Disengaged” employees within your organisation.

A Net Employee Engagement score can then be calculated by subtracting the percentage of “Actively Disengaged” employees from the percentage of “Actively Engaged” employees.

Quantum is also able to benchmark your Net Employee Engagement score against similar sized organisation’s within your specific industry sector.

A breakdown of “Actively Engaged”, “Satisfied”, “Actively Disengaged” and “Undifferentiated” employees will also be provided for each Branch and Department within your organisation.

Comparing scores across work groups will reveal root causes of differences as well as best practices that can be shared.
