Global Skills Shortage
Quantum's research shows that organisations are now exposed to severe workforce supply risks that will transform and threaten their ability to operate and succeed in the future. This situation is set to deteriorate significantly in the near future due to the effects of unprecedented and 'extreme' changes to the demographic make-up of the Australian population. A decrease in birth rates during the 1990s combined with the natural ageing of the baby boomers has meant that exponentially more Australians will leave the workforce during the next decade than enter it. This has not been the case for over 60 years. The impact of this extreme demographic shift is likely to make skilled and professional labour particularly scarce as organisations fight for IT-savvy professionals who can harness the benefits that technology has to offer. No longer will organisations be able to choose from a rising pool of young talent. More than ever before, employers will need to fight to hold on to their skilled and qualified employees. Organisations will need to make a concerted effort to identify attraction and retention factors within their particular organisation. Identifying and acting on these factors will engage employees and give them a compelling reason to commit to the organisation.
